Media reports Russian prosecutors open case against famous YouTuber

(MENAFN) Russian prosecutors have initiated a criminal investigation against popular YouTuber Yury Dud for failing to properly disclose his status as a foreign agent in his online content, according to RIA Novosti citing law enforcement sources. Dud, who boasts over 10 million subscribers, left Russia in early 2022 following the escalation of the Ukraine conflict and was officially designated a foreign agent later that year—a status that requires clear identification in all his published material.

The Moscow Prosecutor’s Office revealed that Dud had been fined twice over the past year for distributing content without the mandated disclaimer but continued to post videos on social media without the proper labeling.

Yury Dud, initially a sports journalist before transitioning to interviews and documentary filmmaking, is well-known for his YouTube channel ‘vDud,’ featuring conversations with public figures and documentaries covering social, political, and historical issues.

Russia’s foreign agent law, inspired by similar legislation in the US, targets individuals or organizations engaged in financial or political activities on behalf of foreign states. Enacted in 2012 and amended multiple times, the law aims to counter what Moscow perceives as growing Western influence.

While those labeled foreign agents are not prohibited from operating in Russia, they face strict regulations including mandatory labeling of content, regular financial disclosures to the Justice Ministry, and transparency about funding sources. Violations can result in penalties of up to two years imprisonment.
