WHO Chief Warns of Civilian Harm in Israel, Iran

(MENAFN) The head of the World Health Organization (WHO) voiced serious alarm on Tuesday about the intensifying conflict between Israel and Iran, cautioning that the violence is causing severe harm to civilians and may pose dangerous health consequences if nuclear facilities are struck.

In a post on X, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus stated, "The escalation of violence between Israel and Iran is extremely concerning -- and is costing the lives of civilians, including children."

He also emphasized that "The growing number of injured civilians are also distressing," underlining the human cost of the ongoing clashes.

He went on to stress that WHO is "particularly concerned" by allegations of attacks near nuclear infrastructure.

"Targeting of nuclear sites … may have immediate and long-term impacts on the environment and health of people in Iran and across the region," Tedros warned, suggesting that such actions could have broad and enduring effects beyond the immediate conflict zone.

As the situation worsens, the WHO leader appealed for calm and renewed diplomatic efforts. "We call on all parties to work towards peace.

The most courageous choose peace," he urged, signaling the need for restraint and negotiation over military responses.

The regional conflict sharply worsened following Israeli aerial assaults on Friday that targeted multiple Iranian locations, including defense-related and nuclear areas.

In response, Tehran carried out retaliatory missile strikes.

According to Israeli officials, at least 24 people have lost their lives, and hundreds more have been wounded due to Iranian missile bombardments since the exchange began.
