Russia states another railway sabotage close to Ukraine
(MENAFN) A railway track in Russia’s Voronezh Region was damaged by an explosive device on Thursday morning, according to the FSB, Russia’s federal security service. The incident comes after two alleged Ukrainian “terror attacks” earlier this week struck railway lines in the Bryansk and Kursk Regions, killing seven people and injuring over 100.
Voronezh Governor Aleksandr Gusev stated that rail services were temporarily disrupted after a train driver noticed damage on the track in time to avoid a serious incident. “There were no injuries as a result of this incident,” Gusev said.
The FSB explained that a blast went off directly in the path of a passenger train. The quick reaction of the driver and crew, who applied the brakes immediately upon spotting the damage, averted a more serious incident.
The FSB has opened a terrorism-related criminal case and an investigation is underway, although it has not directly accused any suspects. Nevertheless, it described the incident as a potential act of terrorism.
This attack underscores a rise in attacks against Russian territory, including drone strikes and railway sabotage. After the two previous attacks in Bryansk and Kursk, President Vladimir Putin condemned the attacks as “undoubtedly a terrorist act” and accused Ukraine of deliberately striking civilian infrastructure to undermine peace negotiations.
Putin raised doubts about the future of peace talks, asking, “Who negotiates with those who resort to terrorism?”
