Media reports heavy rains murdering 63 in northern India
At least 63 people have died in the northern Indian state of Himachal Pradesh following two weeks of relentless monsoon rains, local officials reported on Thursday.
The intense downpours have caused widespread flooding, destroyed infrastructure, and cut off access to numerous remote villages in the Himalayan region. According to local media, more than 150 homes, 106 cattle sheds, 31 vehicles, and 14 bridges were damaged. Additionally, 164 cattle perished in the severe weather.
“Our priority is currently on search, rescue, and restoration efforts,” said D. C. Rana, head of the state’s disaster management authority.
In one dramatic rescue, disaster response personnel carried a pregnant woman for several miles in a palanquin to ensure she received medical care, NDTV reported. Other reports described entire villages being swept away by floodwaters.
The extreme weather has also impacted neighboring states in the Indian plains. Home Minister Amit Shah confirmed on X (formerly Twitter) that National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams have been dispatched to assist with relief operations and that additional reinforcements will be sent as needed.
The India Meteorological Department forecasts continued heavy rainfall across northwestern and central regions through the upcoming week, with the heaviest rains expected on July 6–7. Eastern parts of the country are also likely to experience intense rainfall until July 7.
In June, earlier flooding in the Himalayan areas of India had already resulted in 36 fatalities and displaced over 500,000 people.
