Greece Eyes Strategic Upgrade with Submarines
(MENAFN) Greece is preparing to bolster its naval capabilities by procuring a new fleet of submarines capable of launching cruise missiles, according to reports in a newspaper on Monday.
Drawing on comments made by Defense Minister Nikos Dendias during last month's Maritime Week, the report highlights that Athens is focused on enhancing and enlarging its undersea fleet, with acquisitions expected within the coming decade.
Of the four submarines planned for acquisition, two will reportedly have the ability to fire strategic cruise missiles.
These advanced weapons would allow Greece to extend its offensive reach to distances surpassing 1,000 kilometers (621 miles), the newspaper noted.
The new vessels are designed with state-of-the-art air-independent propulsion systems, upgraded sonar technology, and contemporary combat platforms.
Their design is inspired by the current Type 214 submarines, which are also slated for modernization within the next five years, the report stated.
This strategic naval expansion aims to respond to the increasing strength of the Turkish Navy.
Turkey is actively developing a more powerful maritime force through the construction of new warships, submarines, aircraft carriers, and unmanned maritime systems, the article emphasized.
