Cambodia Set to Launch Mandatory Military Service in 2026
Although the conscription law was initially passed on December 22, 2006, it has remained dormant for nearly two decades. The move to activate the draft comes amid renewed focus on national security and military preparedness, as reported by media.
Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasized that the law will not be enforced immediately. Instead, it will first undergo "significant legislation revisions, particularly concerning the duration of mandatory service." These legal adjustments are expected to clarify terms and conditions before implementation begins.
Under the revised plan, all Cambodian citizens between the ages of 18 and 30 will be required to serve in the armed forces for a two-year period. In contrast, military service for women will continue to be optional, maintaining its voluntary status.
The reactivation of the long-dormant law reflects the government's intent to strengthen national defense capabilities and ensure readiness among the country’s youth.
