China, Russia’s Top Diplomats Engage in Talks
On Sunday in Beijing, Wang Yi met with his visiting Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.
Lavrov arrived in the Chinese capital following a three-day trip to North Korea, where he attended the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers’ meeting scheduled for Tuesday in northern Tianjin.
A statement released by Beijing noted that Wang and Lavrov exchanged "views" on issues such as the Korean Peninsula, the Ukraine crisis, and the Iranian nuclear issue, although no further details were provided.
Significantly, during Lavrov’s meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Saturday, Kim reiterated Pyongyang’s unwavering backing for Moscow in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.
Meanwhile, China has advocated for a political resolution to the conflict that began in February 2022.
The Russian Foreign Ministry reported that the discussions between the two diplomats also included ties with the US, the Iran-Israel conflict, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
"The parties also discussed relations with the United States and prospects for resolving the Ukrainian crisis in accordance with the principles of the UN Charter in their entirety, totality, and interrelation," the ministry stated.
