Cambodia Declares Enforcing Military Draft

(MENAFN) Cambodia is set to introduce compulsory military service beginning next year, Prime Minister Hun Manet declared on Monday.

Although the conscription statute was officially enacted on December 22, 2006, it has not yet been put into practice, according to a report by a daily newspaper.

Prior to its activation, the legislation will undergo "significant legislation revisions, particularly concerning the duration of mandatory service," the Prime Minister stated.

The mandatory service period is anticipated to be lengthened to two years for all Cambodian citizens aged 18 to 30.

However, for women, participation in military service will continue to be optional.
