Senate Sanctions Bill Could Hand Trump “Sledgehammer”
Trump has previously indicated that he might implement further sanctions if negotiations between Russia and Ukraine fail to secure a ceasefire.
He also accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of deliberately delaying the discussions.
In a Sunday interview with a news agency, Graham, who co-sponsored the bill alongside Democrat Richard Blumenthal, remarked that Trump has “left the door open regarding Russia,” even though he has adopted a tough stance on other countries. “That door is about to close,” Graham cautioned.
“Dick and I have got 85 co-sponsors in the United States Senate for congressional sanctions with a sledgehammer available to President Trump to go after Putin’s economy, and all those countries who prop up the Putin war machine,” Graham stated.
The bill would empower Trump to levy tariffs as high as 500% on countries that persist in trading with Russia. Graham specifically named China, India, and Brazil as targets.
He emphasized that Trump would maintain “maximum flexibility” in applying these measures.
