Russia Stresses Importance of Trump Envoy’s Mediation Efforts
“It is very important for us that Mr. Kellogg, as a representative of the team of (US President Donald) Trump, continues his efforts to provide mediation services within the framework of the Russian-Ukrainian settlement,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters during a briefing.
While Moscow expressed no specific expectations for Kellogg’s trip, Peskov reiterated Russia’s willingness to participate in a third round of direct negotiations with Ukraine.
“It is obvious that Kyiv is in no hurry. We are still waiting for proposals (from Ukraine) on the timing,” he said, underscoring the Kremlin's claim of Ukrainian delay in scheduling future talks.
Peskov also responded to Donald Trump’s announcement on Sunday that the US will deliver Patriot missile systems to Ukraine. He stated that Moscow is operating under the assumption that “US military supplies to Ukraine have continued and continue.”
Kellogg arrived in the Ukrainian capital earlier Monday for a week-long visit and was greeted by Andriy Yermak, head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office. In a post on Telegram, Yermak noted that there are "many topics for discussion," including "strengthening security, weapons, sanctions, protecting our people, strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and the United States."
The first two rounds of direct negotiations between Russia and Ukraine — the first since 2021 — were held in May and June in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Baltic Tensions
Peskov also addressed growing instability in the Baltic region, attributing the heightened tensions to what he described as hostile behavior from neighboring European states.
"Of course, the Baltic is now, thanks to the very aggressive policies of the European coastal states, a region where one can say that tension reigns, an atmosphere of tension," Peskov said.
He accused Baltic nations of conducting “provocative” acts, calling them an “absolutely obvious reality.”
Asserting Russia’s presence in the area, Peskov concluded that Moscow would “firmly” safeguard its strategic interests in the Baltic.
