New Zealand Rolls Out Strategy to Double International Student Revenue

(MENAFN) New Zealand has rolled out an ambitious strategy aimed at transforming the country into a top global hub for international students, with a goal to double the education sector's economic impact to NZ$7.2 billion by 2034.

Key initiatives under this plan include expanded work rights for student visa holders, simplified visa application processes, and focused international marketing efforts designed to increase student numbers and elevate New Zealand’s standing as a leading study destination.

Education Minister Erica Stanford highlighted the importance of international education in a statement on Monday, noting it contributed NZ$3.6 billion to the economy in 2024.

"International students not only support research and innovation but also drive investment, productivity, and job creation across the country," Stanford said, pointing out that last year the average international student spent NZ$45,000, significantly benefiting local businesses and the tourism sector.

Starting November, New Zealand will increase work hours for eligible student visa holders from 20 to 25 hours weekly during study periods, extending this benefit to all tertiary students participating in approved exchange or study abroad programs, including short one-semester courses, Stanford confirmed.

The government is also exploring the introduction of a six-month short-term work visa option for international graduates who do not meet the criteria for post-study work rights, providing them additional time to find employment through the Accredited Employer Work Visa route, she added.

The strategy lays out concrete objectives, aiming to boost international student enrolments from 83,700 to 119,000 by 2034 and increase the percentage of prospective students who rank New Zealand among their top three study destinations from 18% to 22% over the same timeframe.
