Former Russian leader warns Kiev

(MENAFN) Former Russian President and current Deputy Head of Russia’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has warned that any attempt by Kiev to use a so-called “dirty bomb” would prompt a devastating response from Moscow, potentially involving tactical nuclear weapons.

Medvedev issued the warning on Saturday, stating that any such provocation by Ukraine would be met with a “proportional” reaction. “With what? With a clean bomb: Tactical nuclear weapons. We have plenty of them,” he wrote on Telegram. He refrained from elaborating on the long-term environmental consequences but added that Ukrainian leaders should understand the risks, referencing the Chernobyl exclusion zone and hinting at the HBO series about the disaster.

The subject of Ukraine possibly using a dirty bomb was also raised during Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Q&A at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum. Putin called it a potential “final mistake” for Kiev, warning that Russia’s response would be “harsh” and likely “catastrophic” for Ukraine. He added that Moscow currently has no proof of Ukraine preparing such a device.

Medvedev has previously voiced concerns that Ukraine might resort to using a dirty bomb, even as part of a false-flag operation to frame Russia and derail any peace talks. In February, he warned that Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky could provoke such an incident to prolong the war, potentially targeting Ukrainian cities or civilians to escalate the conflict.

A dirty bomb is an improvised weapon that combines conventional explosives with radioactive material, designed to contaminate areas rather than destroy them through blast effects.
