Putin addresses top graduates from Russia’s military, security academies
(MENAFN) President Vladimir Putin addressed top graduates from Russia’s military and security academies on Monday, using the occasion to highlight the country’s current military challenges and strategic priorities.
Putin described the ongoing Ukraine conflict as part of a broader “struggle for Russia’s future.” He compared today’s Russian soldiers to the heroes of World War II, emphasizing that the combat experience gained in Ukraine is a vital asset. This battlefield knowledge, he said, must be preserved, expanded, and integrated into future military training to strengthen Russia’s armed forces.
Putin accused Western nations of failing to learn from history, claiming they continue to seek Russia’s “strategic defeat” by arming and funding Ukraine. He stressed that the West is effectively a direct participant in the conflict by providing weapons, money, intelligence, and technical support to Kiev.
Russia will prioritize further modernization of its armed forces in response to escalating global tensions, Putin said. A key development will be the creation of a new military branch focused on unmanned aerial systems, recognizing the growing importance of drones in modern warfare.
Putin reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to strengthening its nuclear deterrent. He announced that new intercontinental ballistic missiles and upgraded strategic bombers will enter service this year. Specifically, the Strategic Missile Forces will receive modern Yars missile systems, while the air component will be enhanced with upgraded Tu-160M bombers.
Russia is beginning mass production of its Oreshnik hypersonic intermediate-range missile system, which was successfully tested in Ukraine last November against the Yuzhmash military facility. The Oreshnik system features multiple independently targeted warheads and has proven effective in combat, Putin stated.
