Ex-Nigerian President Buhari Passes Away at 82
Buhari, who held Nigeria’s presidency from 2015 until 2023, died while undergoing medical care at a clinic in the UK capital.
In an official statement, Tinubu revealed he has instructed Vice President Kashim Shettima to fly to London to escort Buhari’s remains back to Nigeria.
Born on December 17, 1942, Buhari had a prominent career spanning military service and political leadership. Before winning the presidency in 2015, he was a long-time political activist and became the first opposition candidate to unseat an incumbent president in Nigeria’s history. He secured a second term in 2019 before handing over the presidency to Tinubu on May 29, 2023.
Throughout his administration, Buhari prioritized three core agendas: national security, fighting corruption, and diversifying the economy. He spearheaded critical operations against the Boko Haram insurgency in northeastern Nigeria and worked to reclaim stolen public assets.
His time in office also featured efforts to expand agriculture and infrastructure, although his presidency was challenged by two economic recessions and ongoing security crises in several regions.
As a tribute to the late former president, Tinubu has ordered that flags be flown at half-mast nationwide.
