US democrat denounces Court allowing layoffs of Education of department
“Disgusting,” Schumer stated on Monday via social media platform X.
The ruling overturned a lower court injunction that had temporarily halted the mass firings and other moves aimed at dismantling the department. This paves the way for the Trump administration to continue its push to reduce the federal government’s role in education, favoring increased state control.
The Supreme Court’s decision now allows the administration to proceed with layoffs that in March eliminated nearly half of the department’s staff, as well as initiatives like transferring oversight of the federal student loan portfolio.
Schumer accused Trump and Education Secretary Linda McMahon of aggressively undermining public education.
“They want to take a chainsaw to public education in America, firing thousands and walking away from millions of students,” he said. “All they want to do is impose their ideology on our kids’ education and tear it apart. This isn’t streamlining. It’s sabotage. And it’s American kids paying the price.”
In response, McMahon expressed approval of the Supreme Court’s decision, affirming that the department will continue with workforce reductions and efforts to return educational authority to the states.
