India, China Ties Progress Steadily
Jaishankar is currently in China to attend a gathering of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) foreign ministers.
The Indian minister attributed the advancement in diplomatic ties to successful efforts in de-escalating border tensions and sustaining tranquility in the disputed areas.
He emphasized that the growing stability along the frontier has contributed to a more constructive atmosphere between the neighboring nations.
“Since our leaders’ meeting in Kazan in October 2024, the India-China relationship has been gradually moving in a positive direction,” Jaishankar remarked. “Our responsibility is to maintain that momentum.”
The diplomatic thaw follows discussions held between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping during the 2024 BRICS summit in Kazan.
These interactions marked a turning point after the deadly 2020 Himalayan border confrontation, which resulted in casualties on both sides and led to a period of heightened strain.
During his visit to Beijing, Jaishankar reiterated the importance of nurturing the bilateral connection and stressed the need for mature dialogue.
“We have also earlier agreed that differences should not become disputes, nor should competition ever become conflict,” he stated.
“On this foundation, we can now continue to develop our ties along a positive trajectory.”
