Trump hovers ‘soccer’ rename

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has floated the idea of renaming “soccer” as “football” in the United States, suggesting he might issue an executive order to make the change. His remarks came during the FIFA Club World Cup final on Sunday, where Chelsea defeated Paris Saint-Germain 3-0. Trump attended the match with FIFA President Gianni Infantino and presented medals to the players afterward.

When asked in a post-match interview if he would consider formally changing the sport’s name in the US, Trump responded, “I think we could do that,” noting that football “can bring the world together.”

The term ‘soccer’ has been used in America for over 200 years, derived from ‘association football,’ while most countries — including 2026 co-hosts Canada and Mexico — use ‘football’ or a local equivalent.

Trump linked this possible change to his broader political messaging, claiming the US has bounced back from difficult times. He cited visits to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE, and claimed NATO leaders told him the US was “dead” a year ago but is now “the hottest country in the world.” He added, “Soccer is going to be hot here too.”

Trump’s comments come as the US accelerates its preparations to co-host the 2026 World Cup, forming a White House task force and committing to anti-discrimination efforts. However, critics have highlighted contradictions between these pledges and Trump’s strict immigration policies, raising concerns about whether fans and athletes will face entry issues.

Throughout the match and during the trophy ceremony, Trump was met with boos from the crowd, including during the national anthem and while standing with Chelsea’s Cole Palmer.
