Kenya Intensifies Security Efforts for High-Stakes 2024 CHAN

(MENAFN) Kenya is intensifying security efforts as it prepares to host the postponed 2024 CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN) starting next month, a top government official confirmed.

"We want to assure the country that we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure visitors are received well at the airport. They are going to be facilitated at the airport. We have also put security at the airport to ensure visitors are screened," said Kipchumba Murkomen, cabinet secretary at the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, during a press briefing Monday evening.

Murkomen inspected the Nairobi venues slated for the tournament on Monday, evaluating the security frameworks. He disclosed that these measures extend beyond the stadiums, covering hotels, major transportation routes, and prominent tourist spots.

"This is a moment of national pride for us. We are lucky as a country that we shall be hosting the finals of the CHAN this year. This is a great opportunity for us to rally behind our team so that we shall have our national team playing in the finals at home," Murkomen emphasized.

Significant upgrades have been made at Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, including the installation of advanced access gates that require digital entry cards, a move aimed at minimizing overcrowding and preventing stampede risks, according to Murkomen.

Kenya is collaborating with neighboring Tanzania and Uganda to co-host the 19-team tournament, exclusively featuring home-based players. The competition will begin in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, on August 2 and conclude in Nairobi on August 30.

Additionally, these three nations will jointly host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations finals, marking a continued regional partnership in major football events.
