EU to negotiate resolution of thirty percent tariffs
At a press briefing in Brussels, EU Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maros Sefcovic and Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen emphasized the EU’s preference for dialogue while underscoring the importance of unity among member states.
The threat of tariffs emerged after US President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the US would impose a 30% tariff on imports from the EU and Mexico starting August 1, putting at risk ongoing trade talks. The EU had been aiming to finalize a comprehensive trade agreement this month.
“The EU, as you know very well, never walks away without genuine effort,” Sefcovic said.
“Especially considering the hard work invested, how close we find ourselves to making a deal, and the clear benefits of the negotiated solution. But as I have said before, it takes two hands to clap.”
He confirmed that high-level discussions with US officials, including President Trump, continue.
“We want to use every day, every possibility, and every minute until the first of August to find a negotiated solution,” Sefcovic added.
The EU official described the proposed 30% tariff as “absolutely prohibitive to any trade,” stressing that the bloc’s priority is to safeguard jobs, businesses, and the overall European economy.
“I was very open with my US counterparts, it has to be the agreement which would have a support of our member states of the European Parliament and it has to be the agreement which would be acceptable to us,” he concluded.
