South African Police Minister Gets Suspended
This move, which underscores the gravity of the situation, places Mchunu on immediate leave while a deeper examination is initiated.
On Sunday, Ramaphosa formally announced that Mchunu would be relieved of his duties pending further investigation.
To oversee this process, he established a commission of inquiry and appointed Firoz Cachalia as interim minister.
Cachalia is a legal scholar at the University of the Witwatersrand, currently chairs the National Anti-Corruption Advisory Council, and has previously served as the community safety minister for Gauteng.
The President emphasized that the commission’s mandate is to scrutinize both present and past high-ranking officials “who may have aided or abetted the alleged criminal activity, failed to act on credible intelligence or internal warnings, or benefited financially or politically from a syndicate’s operations.”
This directive points to concerns of long-standing institutional compromise.
The situation escalated on July 6 when KwaZulu-Natal’s provincial police commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, made explosive statements during a press briefing.
According to Mkhwanazi, a highly organized criminal network has penetrated the nation’s policing and intelligence frameworks.
He accused the suspended minister of deliberately undermining crucial investigations and collaborating with certain individuals—including one facing murder charges—to dismantle a unit assigned to probe political killings.
He further revealed that over 100 investigation files were extracted from the task force and have since remained inactive.
