Kremlin spokesman says Germany is becoming source of danger
As reported by various sources, Peskov told a business outlet that it was difficult to believe Pistorius had made such statements, but confirmed that, unfortunately, they were real.
“Germany is becoming dangerous again,” he added.
The comments by Pistorius were featured in an interview published Sunday, in which he praised the preparedness of German forces and affirmed their willingness to use lethal force if conflict with Russia erupts.
“If deterrence doesn’t work and Russia attacks, is it going to happen? Yes,” Pistorius said. “But I would recommend that you simply go to Vilnius and talk to the representatives of the German brigade there. They know exactly what their job is.”
Pistorius emphasized that peace discussions could only take place “on equal terms” and “from a position of strength.” He also clarified that Germany is not attempting to “intimidate anyone,” but warned against any misperceptions about the country’s resolve.
“No one should think that we’re weak or that we won’t defend ourselves,” he added.
Claims of a potential Russian assault have been a common theme among officials from NATO member states. Moscow, however, has repeatedly dismissed such warnings as unfounded. The Russian government maintains that there are no plans to attack the alliance and has labeled such suggestions as “nonsense.”
In a related statement last month, Peskov argued that NATO requires a perceived enemy to legitimize its growing military expenditures.
“They have made a monster out of Russia in order to justify the decision to increase NATO defense spending to 5% of GDP,” he said at the time.
