Chinese President Reaffirms Commitment to Stronger Russia Ties
The high-level discussion occurred in the lead-up to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Council session in Tianjin.
During the meeting, Xi expressed strong approval of the current state of Chinese-Russian relations and emphasized his dedication to expanding their comprehensive strategic partnership. He also acknowledged the planned visit of President Vladimir Putin, calling their connection a “long-standing and good friendship.”
While specific details were not disclosed, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Xi and Lavrov covered a range of pressing global and regional matters. They also reviewed ongoing political engagements between the two countries, particularly in preparation for Putin’s forthcoming trip to China. Putin is scheduled to participate in the SCO Heads of State Council on September 1—the organization's highest decision-making body—and attend commemorative events on September 3 marking the 80th anniversary of Japan’s defeat in World War II.
Lavrov had earlier held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Both officials praised the strength of the Russia-China partnership. As noted in a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry, Wang stated that China and Russia share “the most stable, mature and strategically valuable major-country relationship in the world.”
Lavrov is also set to attend Tuesday’s SCO Foreign Ministers’ Council, where discussions will focus on the organization’s future path and major geopolitical issues, including logistical and strategic preparations for the upcoming leaders’ summit in September.
