US issues record number for child deportation commands

(MENAFN) In April, over 8,300 undocumented immigrant children aged 11 or younger were issued deportation orders in the United States, marking the highest monthly total ever recorded, according to court data reported by The Independent. Many of these children face immigration judges alone, without legal representation or guardians.

Since taking office in January, President Donald Trump has made immigration a key focus, criticizing former President Joe Biden for policies he says have encouraged illegal migration. Immigration judges have ordered the removal of more than 53,000 minors during Trump’s current term, most of whom are in elementary school or younger. While deportations of teenagers have also increased, they have not yet reached the levels seen in 2020 during Trump’s first administration.

Some children involved are unaccompanied minors with no guardian in the US, although authorities no longer track the exact number of such cases. Lawyers told The Independent that many children struggle to understand the legal process. One case highlighted involved a six-year-old who was separated from his father, detained for four months, and deported without access to legal aid after federal funding was cut.

Data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC) shows that children under 11 now face the highest rates of removal of any age group. In May, 75% of cases involving this age group ended in deportation, up from 45% in January. For children under four, that figure reportedly rose to 78%.

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson denied claims that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) targets children, stating families are given options to stay together or appoint caretakers.

Trump’s immigration policies have provoked nationwide protests. In June, National Guard troops were deployed in Los Angeles following unrest. Earlier this month, Trump signed a bill allocating $100 billion to ICE for detentions, deportations, and completing the border wall with Mexico.
