EU introduces app to boost online child protection
The guidelines aim to help digital platforms better protect minors from various online threats, including addictive design techniques, exposure to harmful content, cyberbullying, and unwanted contact. They also offer detailed instructions on how and when age verification should be applied, especially on platforms that pose higher risks—such as those featuring adult content.
A central feature of the initiative is a new age verification tool that prioritizes user privacy. The app allows individuals to confirm they are over 18 without disclosing personal data like their birthdate or identity.
The app will first be tested in five EU countries: Denmark, France, Greece, Italy, and Spain. Trials will involve collaboration with a range of online platforms, including adult content sites. Depending on the outcome, the tool could be expanded to verify other age thresholds or be adapted for industries like alcohol sales.
This initiative marks a key step toward establishing a unified and privacy-respecting method of age verification across the European Union under the DSA framework.
"Making sure our children and young people are safe online is of paramount importance to this Commission," said Henna Virkkunen, executive vice president for tech sovereignty, security and democracy. "Platforms have no excuse to be continuing practices that put children at risk."
