Boat Overturn Off Indonesia’s Mentawai Islands Leaves 11 Missing
Authorities confirmed that seven people have been pulled to safety since the vessel overturned on Monday, while 11 passengers remain unaccounted for, the agency reported in an official statement.
The ill-fated boat was transporting 10 local government officials alongside eight other travelers. It set sail from Sikakap, a small town within the Mentawai Islands, destined for another small town, Tuapejat, when it capsized.
This disaster follows a similar incident on July 3, when a ferry with 53 passengers and 12 crew members sank en route from Java to Bali. That accident resulted in at least 18 fatalities, with 30 survivors rescued so far.
The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has issued alerts warning of harsh weather conditions across Indonesian maritime zones.
