US Reaches High Number of Child Deportation Orders
Many of these children reportedly face immigration proceedings alone, often without the support of legal representatives or adult guardians.
Immigration policy has taken center stage in U.S. politics since President Donald Trump returned to office.
He has accused former President Joe Biden of encouraging widespread unlawful entry into the country.
Trump has reinstated a firm stance on border enforcement, which has resulted in a significant rise in deportation activity.
Since Trump resumed the presidency in January, immigration courts have issued removal orders for more than 53,000 minors, the majority of whom are in primary school or even younger, according to the report.
Although the expulsion of teenagers has also increased, the numbers remain lower than the high point during Trump’s initial term in 2020.
A portion of these children are described as unaccompanied minors—youths who are in the U.S. without any adult family member.
Immigration agencies reportedly no longer keep precise records of how many children fall into this category, which has raised further concern among advocates and legal professionals.
Attorneys interviewed by the news outlet emphasized that young children typically do not grasp the intricacies of the legal system.
One example involved a six-year-old boy who was allegedly separated from his father, kept in detention for four months, and ultimately deported without receiving any legal assistance after federal legal aid funding was withdrawn.
