Mali Denounces Czech Republic Over Denied Visas
According to a statement from the Foreign Ministry, Mali expressed its protest to Prague through an official diplomatic note, emphasizing its dissatisfaction over the refusal of visas.
The Malian team was scheduled to compete in the prestigious FIBA tournament, which is taking place in the southern Czech city of Brno from July 12 to 20.
FIBA reported that it was informed the Malian delegation was unable to make the trip to Brno due to issues related to visa processing.
As a result, Mali’s scheduled games against Australia, France, and Brazil were canceled, leaving Nigeria as the continent’s only representative still participating in the event.
The ministry expressed deep regret over the situation, describing it as a lost opportunity for the Malian squad to perform on a global stage and symbolically represent both their nation and the African continent as a whole.
Labeling the Czech authorities’ actions as an “unfriendly act” and a “breach of the obligations” expected of nations hosting international competitions, the ministry called on them to disclose full details regarding the “unfortunate” matter.
