Trump Signals Progress on Armenia, Azerbaijan Peace

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that initiatives aimed at achieving a peace accord between Armenia and Azerbaijan appear to be approaching a “successful conclusion.”

“We just seem to have Armenia and Azerbaijan. It looks like that’s going to come to a conclusion — a successful conclusion,” Trump remarked during a discussion with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in the Oval Office.

A meeting was held last week in the UAE between Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, during which both parties agreed to sustain ongoing direct dialogue.

The relationship between these two former Soviet nations has remained strained since 1991, following the Armenian military’s occupation of Karabakh — a region acknowledged globally as Azerbaijani territory — along with seven neighboring districts.

A significant portion of this land was reclaimed by Azerbaijan during a 44-day conflict in late 2020, which concluded with a ceasefire facilitated by Russia, laying the groundwork for normalization and border negotiations.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan regained full control over Karabakh after separatist groups in the area surrendered.

Later, on March 13, both Baku and Yerevan announced they had found common ground on all 17 points of a proposed peace agreement.

However, a final deal has not yet been officially signed.
