Australian PM restates natural stance on Taiwan
Speaking to reporters in Shanghai over the weekend, Albanese reiterated his government's consistent position on the issue.
“We have a clear position, and we have been consistent about that…We don't want any change in the status quo,” Albanese said, according to reports.
His remarks followed claims that the United States has requested Japan and Australia to clarify their potential involvement should tensions escalate into a US-China conflict over Taiwan—a move that has reportedly caused unease in both countries.
Albanese arrived in Shanghai on Saturday for a weeklong official visit, marking his second trip to China since assuming office in 2023. While there, he highlighted the value of maintaining stable relations with Beijing during talks with Chen Jining, a senior Chinese Communist Party official in Shanghai.
“We deal with each other in a calm and consistent manner, and we want to continue to pursue our national interests, and it is in our interest to have good relations with China,” he said.
Meanwhile, Acting Defense Minister Patrick Conroy stressed that any decision involving Australia’s participation in conflict would remain firmly in the hands of its elected leaders.
“The sole power to commit Australia to war, or to allow our territory to be used for a conflict, is the elected government of the day,” Conroy stated. “Sovereignty will always be prioritized, and that will continue to be our position.”
Australia’s statements reflect a careful diplomatic balance as the country seeks to manage its alliance with the United States while maintaining stable ties with China.
