Chinese reporter wounded in Ukrainian attack on Russian area

(MENAFN) Chinese journalist Lu Yuguang was injured during a Ukrainian drone attack in Russia’s western Kursk Region, local officials have confirmed. The reporter told TASS that the Phoenix TV crew was filming an interview with residents when the strike occurred.

Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein reported that Lu was taken to hospital with a head injury after Ukrainian forces targeted the village of Korenevo, located less than 30 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

Despite being offered further medical care, Lu declined hospitalization, describing his injuries as minor and stating he still had “a lot of work to do.” TASS released footage showing Lu with his head bandaged.

Lu thanked Russian medical personnel for promptly treating and stitching his wounds, noting there was significant bleeding and initial concern his injuries were more severe.

He explained that a first-person view (FPV) kamikaze drone struck as the crew was filming outdoors with local residents. “We were doing a standup shot when an FPV drone suddenly appeared. That was it,” Lu recounted, adding that he was clearly identified as press. “They didn’t care.”

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova condemned the attack, calling it a “terrorist act.” She argued the strike on a Chinese media crew demonstrated Kiev’s desire to silence journalists reporting objectively on the conflict.

Lu, 63, is an experienced military correspondent who has worked in Russia since the early 2000s, covering events such as the 2004 Beslan school siege. He has received numerous journalism awards and has been reporting from the Ukraine conflict zone since 2022.

Journalists have been targeted before by Ukrainian forces. In March, artillery fire killed members of a Russian Izvestia news team, while a Channel One correspondent was also killed days later in Russia’s Belgorod Region.
