Governor claims Russia has full control of Lugansk republic

(MENAFN) The Russian military has reportedly gained full control over the entire territory of the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), according to the region’s governor, Leonid Pasechnik. Speaking live on Russia’s Channel One on Monday, Pasechnik announced that the LPR has been “100% liberated.”

While the Russian Defense Ministry has not officially confirmed this statement, the military had previously captured the two largest LPR cities held by Ukraine — Severodonetsk and Lisichansk — during its summer offensive in 2022. Following those victories, Russian forces took control of the surrounding areas, with the frontline remaining largely unchanged since.

Prior to this latest development, Ukrainian forces still controlled about 100 square kilometers in the northwest of the LPR, including some villages near Makeevka, which are now reportedly deserted and destroyed. Additionally, Kyiv maintained a hold on the Serebryanskoye forestry north of the Seversky Donets river, a heavily contested wooded area that has seen prolonged trench warfare without significant shifts.
