South Korean Court Postpones Lee Jae Myung’s Trial

(MENAFN) A district court in South Korea deferred the trial of President Lee Jae Myung on Tuesday concerning accusations of illegal fund transfers to North Korea.

This move effectively halts all five criminal cases against him that have been underway since his election last month, according to a news agency.

The Suwon District Court justified the delay by emphasizing that Lee currently holds the presidency, a position representing the entire nation.

“To ensure he can concentrate on his responsibilities guaranteed by the Constitution and maintain the continuity of government operations, we will set a new date in the future,” the court announced during a preliminary hearing.

The charges relate to claims that while serving as governor of Gyeonggi Province from 2019 to 2020, Lee allegedly directed the head of an underwear manufacturing company to send $5 million to North Korea for a smart farming project, as well as an additional $3 million intended to support a proposed visit to the North.

His four additional cases have also been suspended under Article 84 of the Constitution, which protects a sitting president from criminal prosecution except in cases of treason or rebellion.

These other accusations include making false statements ahead of the 2022 presidential election, corruption connected to a development initiative during his mayoral tenure in Seongnam, misappropriation of provincial funds while governor of Gyeonggi, and influencing false testimony.
