India resumes tourist visas for Chinese nationals

(MENAFN) India has announced it will restart issuing tourist visas to Chinese citizens, ending a five-year suspension and signaling improving relations between New Delhi and Beijing.

The visa restrictions were initially put in place during the early phase of the Covid-19 pandemic and remained after tensions escalated following a deadly border clash in the Himalayas in 2020.

The Indian Embassy stated on Chinese social media platform Weibo that starting July 24, 2025, Chinese nationals can apply for tourist visas to India.

China has long pushed for the restoration of visa services and the resumption of direct flights between the two countries, which were also halted in 2020. The Chinese Foreign Ministry welcomed the move, emphasizing that easing cross-border travel benefits both nations and pledging continued dialogue with India to facilitate travel.

Efforts to normalize relations began in October 2024 after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the BRICS summit in Kazan. They agreed to disengage from contested areas and work on restoring ties.

Subsequent military and diplomatic talks have advanced proposals to ease trade and investment restrictions, responding to industry demands. In a recent meeting in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi noted the relationship has been steadily improving since the leaders’ 2024 summit.

In June, the sacred Kailash-Mansarovar pilgrimage resumed after five years, with Indian pilgrims crossing into Tibet, marking a significant step in renewed cross-border engagement.

Last week, China expressed readiness to boost trilateral cooperation with India and Russia, further highlighting warming diplomatic relations.
