Canada Addresses Two-State Solution
Speaking at a news conference in New York during the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Carney noted that while this outcome was hoped for, the hope was “receding” as Israel continued its military operations in Gaza.
He explained that this diminishing hope prompted Canada to officially declare its endorsement of the state of Palestine earlier this week.
The Canadian prime minister addressed various topics posed by journalists during the briefing, including plans for acquiring submarines and F-35 fighter jets.
Carney was also asked whether Canada’s support for a two-state solution might affect a trade agreement with the US that has yet to be signed.
He reassured that it was not a concern, emphasizing that Canada “has the best trade deal in the world” with the US, which he described as the “fundamental point.”
Earlier in the day, US President Donald Trump harshly criticized countries that expressed support for Palestine.
Regarding the prospective purchase of up to 12 submarines and 88 F-35 fighter jets, Carney stated that Canada is prioritizing the “best price listed by a nation” and the deal that provides the greatest industrial benefits for the country.
Amid global efforts to renegotiate trade deals in response to the US’s shift in “tone” and imposition of tariffs, Carney observed that there are still “good prospects,” particularly for Canada.
