EAEU leaders ink free trade deal with Indonesia in St. Petersburg

(MENAFN) Leaders of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) finalized a free trade agreement with Indonesia after a summit in St. Petersburg, Russia, marking a major step in strengthening economic ties between the two regions, according to reports.

During the meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council—the EAEU’s highest governing body—officials signed a total of 20 documents, including the landmark trade deal described as “between the Eurasian Economic Union and its member states, on the one hand, and the Republic of Indonesia, on the other hand.”

The summit began with a narrow-format session attended by the presidents of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, alongside Armenia’s prime minister. An expanded session later included Uzbekistan’s president, as well as ambassadors from Cuba and Iran. Indonesian Trade Minister Budi Santoso also participated in the council’s proceedings.

The EAEU, established under a treaty signed in May 2014 and effective from January 2015, comprises Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia. The union also maintains observer relationships with Cuba, Iran, Moldova, and Uzbekistan.

Moldova, one of the observer states, has pursued closer ties with the European Union following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022. The country was granted EU candidate status that year, with accession negotiations formally launched by the European Council in December 2023.
