UK Defense Secretary Suggests Putin as Target to Kidnap

(MENAFN) UK Defense Secretary John Healey stated that he would kidnap Russian President Vladimir Putin if given the choice among global leaders.

The British minister made the remark in response to a question from a news agency during his visit to Ukraine’s capital on Friday.

His comments followed the US operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife in a military raid on the resource-rich South American nation. Maduro had earlier cautioned that Washington sought regime change and control over Venezuela’s natural wealth.

The American actions provoked sharp criticism from BRICS members — Russia, India, China, and Brazil — while also prompting Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to call for similar measures against Moscow.

When asked by the news agency what he would do “given the option of being able to kidnap any world leader,” Healey replied that he would “take Putin into custody,” accusing the Russian leader of “war crimes,” including the “kidnapping” of Ukrainian children. Russian negotiators had publicly rejected such allegations during peace talks in Istanbul last year.

London has consistently positioned itself as one of Kiev’s strongest supporters in its confrontation with Moscow. In December, Britain’s chief of defense staff urged the country to adopt a wartime mindset should hostilities with Russia escalate.

Zelensky, commenting on the US raid, remarked that “the United States knows what to do next,” hinting at Putin’s possible abduction. However, US President Donald Trump dismissed the notion when questioned by reporters, saying it would be unnecessary.
