China Pushes Back Against US "Threat" Claim Over Greenland Takeover
Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun addressed reporters in Beijing, declaring: "China has repeatedly elaborated its position on the Greenland issue on many occasions. International law, based on the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, is the foundation of the current international order and must be safeguarded."
He added firmly: "We urge the US side to stop using the so-called 'China threat' as a pretext to pursue selfish gains."
The statement came after US President Donald Trump threatened 10% tariffs on nations deploying Arctic troops. Trump has persistently pursued control of Greenland—a self-ruling Danish territory—citing strategic positioning, mineral wealth, and alleged Russian and Chinese expansion as justification. Military force remains on the table.
Both Denmark and Greenland have categorically rejected any sale, asserting Danish sovereignty.
Saturday, Trump announced 10% tariffs on eight European nations—Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland—effective February 1, escalating to 25% in June over their Greenland opposition.
The targeted countries issued a unified Sunday statement condemning the threats while pledging Arctic security cooperation.
