Starmer Rejects Trump Pressure Over UK Trade Deal, Iran Stance

(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said he will “not yield” to pressure from US President Donald Trump, following comments suggesting that a UK trade deal could be reopened in response to London’s stance on the Iran conflict.

Speaking during the weekly Prime Minister’s Questions session in the House of Commons on Wednesday, Starmer firmly responded: “I'm not going to change my mind. I'm not going to yield.”

His remarks came after Liberal Democrats leader Ed Davey referenced Trump’s recent interview, in which the US president warned he could “rip up” a trade agreement with Britain, framing it as a response to what he described as the UK’s refusal to support US actions regarding the Iran situation.

Starmer reiterated that Britain would not become involved in the conflict, stressing that participation would not serve national interests.

“It is not our war, and a lot of pressure has been applied to me to take a different course, and that pressure included what happened last night. I'm not going to change my mind,” he said, repeating that external pressure would not alter his position.

He added that the UK has faced sustained pressure to change course but insisted his stance remains unchanged.

In the same interview, Trump criticized UK immigration policies as “insane” and expressed frustration over what he described as a weakening of the US-UK “special relationship.”
