Macron Calls for Cooperation Between G7, BRICS

(MENAFN) French President Emmanuel Macron has emphasized that the Group of Seven should not be portrayed as an adversary to BRICS. France has taken over the presidency of the G7 this year, coinciding with India’s leadership role in BRICS.

Macron stated that France’s presidency places it at the center of global multilateral efforts. In his annual address to French ambassadors on Thursday, he declared: “The G7 should not be an anti-China club or an anti-BRICS club,” while also stressing that “we can’t let the BRICS be an anti-G7 club either.”

The French leader underscored the importance of countering the “fragmentation of the world.” He added, “With India being at the presidency of the BRICS, I hope to work with it to be able to create bridges…Bridging these groups–G7 and BRICS, is a very important priority for me.”

Macron argued that uniting these blocs is vital, noting that collaboration with BRICS is crucial given the demographic strength of its member nations.

His remarks came as India’s Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar visited France for bilateral discussions, and amid global reactions to the US abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse. Macron also confirmed that he will travel to India in February.

The French president’s comments carry weight as US President Donald Trump has openly expressed his dislike for BRICS. Last year, Trump threatened to impose an additional 10% tariff on countries aligning with the group.
