TSSA Public Safety Report finds decreases in incidents and severity of injuries

Toronto, ON, Sept. 18, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Highlighting an overall decline in the rate and severity of incidents, the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) has released its 2026 Public Safety Report.

As Ontario’s public safety regulator, TSSA oversees safety in amusement devices, boilers and pressure vessels, elevating devices, fuels, operating engineers, and ski lifts.

TSSA’s Public Safety Report provides a review of safety trends, incidents and injuries, drawing insights into safety performance and regulatory oversight in its regulated sectors.

Safety Outcomes Show Progress

In the fiscal year ending April 30, 2026, a total of 6,579 incidents were reported across TSSA’s regulated sectors, down from 6,647 in the previous fiscal year. The incident rate decreased to 406 incidents per million people, from 437 the previous fiscal year.

Permanent injuries also reached a 10-year low of 25, reflecting progress in lowering the severity of incidents.

“The growing maturity of TSSA’s data and analytics capabilities is helping us better understand risk and identify where our regulatory efforts can have the greatest impact,” said Anand Rangarajan, Director of Business Intelligence, TSSA. “Advanced analytics, including predictive models for inspection prioritization and risk scoring, allow us to allocate resources more effectively and focus attention where it is needed most.”

A Shared Commitment to Safety

TSSA conducts inspections, which help identify potential harms and generate data that informs TSSA’s analysis, reporting and decision-making.

In the reporting year, TSSA completed 20,385 periodic inspections, with a 71 per cent compliance rate, up from 69 per cent the previous year. A compliant outcome means no high-risk issues were identified.

For high-risk devices, TSSA provides proactive, no-cost compliance support to help businesses understand where improvement is needed. More than 190 organizations used this TSSA service to address their specific challenges.

TSSA also hosted webinars for more than 1,500 participants, helping owners, operators and certificate holders stay informed about new requirements and how to meet their obligations.
